11 Reasons to Adopt an Adult Cat
1. They make purr-fect housemates
Adult cats are the purr-fect housemates; they will be your best friend, a partner in crime, nap buddy, adventure pal and ‘Netflix and chill’ connoisseur. Adult cats are low maintenance pets who are full of unconditional love – it doesn’t get any better than that.
2. They’re good for you
Adult cats provide emotional support, unconditional love and can even reduce stress and anxiety in their owners. Cats are comforting companions, and they will always be there for you no matter the time of day. Many studies even show that patting or stroking a cat can help to lower blood pressure.
3. They know their purr-sonality
Unlike kittens, adult cats have grown up and formed their purr-sonalities. You can be confident that the cat you bond with at our shelter will be the cat you take home. Kittens are still learning and developing their personalities, so they may grow up differently than you expected.
4. They make purr-fect nap partners
After a long day at work, or on a rainy winter day, there’s nothing better than curling up on the couch with your purring, adoring pet for a movie and nap. While other types of pets might want to play, run and jump, you can rely on your adult cat for a solid snoozing session.
5. They’re clean (litter-rally)
Adult cats are very clean pets. They continuously groom themselves and prefer to hide their toileting in a clean litter box. Other types of pets often don’t self-groom, and younger pets are learning about cleaning and toileting, so are usually very messy.
6. They have fabulous manners
Adult cats have often lived in homes before and understand that there are household rules. They will greet you at the door when you get home, sleep quietly with you through the night, use their cat poles for scratching, and their toys for playing.
7. You can teach an old cat new tricks
Cats are adaptable, and once they’re in their new home, your cat will mould themselves around you and your lifestyle. Your cat will learn your routine and will make you the centre of their universe.
8. They are older and wiser
Adult cats are well past their troublesome years, and they understand how a home works; their main goals are to find a loving, safe, home and to stay there. All they want is to give you their love and be loved in return – that’s true wisdom.
9. They aren’t teething
If you’re considering adopting a kitten, remember that all children teeth, which also means that they chew. Adult cats, however, are well beyond their teething years and don’t feel the need to chew up everything in sight. (Phew!)
10. They spend less time kitten around
Other types of pets, and even kittens, can be full of energy and mischief. Energetic pets are all fun and games for those of us who have time, patience and perseverance. However, if you’re looking for a pet who will easily fit into your life, an adult cat is the pet for you. Adult cats are past the ‘climbing the curtains at 4 am’ phase, and are less likely to get themselves (and your house) into chaotic situations.
11. They need you
It’s a sad reality that adult cats spend longer in our shelter than any other type of pet. They’re just as loving, cute and deserving, so please give an adult cat a second chance that they’re waiting for – they need you.
